This is the strangest AI story of the year. OpenAI, the company that started the race, spent recent weeks asking members of Congress a quiet question: if the big AI labs agreed to slow down together, would that break the law?
Why they’re asking - OpenAI’s chief scientist, Jakub Pachocki, wrote last weekend that labs may need to “coordinate to slow down” to keep self-improving AI safe.
This week, Sam Altman told staff OpenAI is open to pacing its own development, if rivals do the same.
Here’s the trap - When competitors agree to limit how much they produce, that can be illegal under US antitrust law, the Sherman Act.
