OpenAI killed Sora this week. Not because the technology failed. Because it cost too much to run.
That same week: Meta tied executive pay to a valuation target of $9 trillion. Reflection AI, a two-year-old company, is in talks to raise $2.5 billion. Congress released a national AI framework that replaces federal oversight with regulatory sandboxes. Luma shipped an image model that beat Google in internal preference tests.
The technology is no longer the hard part. The economics are.

Sora shuts down, ending $1B Disney deal
OpenAI has shut down its AI video app Sora, just months after launch — one of the first major pullbacks in generative video.
The shutdown ends a $1 billion licensing deal with Walt Disney, which would have brought 200+ characters into AI-generated content. Sora peaked at 6 million users before engagement dropped sharply.
Costs were the core issue. Video generation is far more compute-intensive than text or image models, with OpenAI reportedly spending billions annually to sustain such systems. Resources are now being redirected toward coding tools, agents, robotics, and a new model called “Spud” — aimed at productivity and economic impact, not entertainment. Read more
Why this matters: Capability alone isn’t enough. Even the most advanced AI products need sustainable economics and clear use cases to survive.
Meta ties executive pay to a $9T AI ambition
Meta is offering senior executives stock packages worth hundreds of millions, tied to long-term performance targets.
The lowest reward tier requires an ~88% stock increase. The highest requires a 6× jump - pushing Meta’s valuation past $9 trillion. The plan also includes $170 million in additional stock awards to retain leadership amid intense competition.
Capital expenditure for 2026 is projected at up to $135 billion, largely for data centres and infrastructure. Read more
Luma’s Uni-1 enters the race against Google’s image models
Luma AI has introduced Uni-1, a reasoning-driven image generation model positioned against Google’s Nano Banana.
In internal preference tests, Uni-1 ranked #1 overall in style, editing, and reference-based generation. For pure text-to-image, it placed second. Independent analysis points to particular strength in structured tasks and multi-step visual reasoning — an area where most models still struggle. It also shows strong temporal consistency as scenes evolve.

🆕 Reflection AI targets a $25 billion valuation with Nvidia backing
Founded: 2024 · Round size: $2.5B · Projected valuation: $25B
Reflection AI is reportedly in talks to raise $2.5 billion — a round that would value the two-year-old company at $25 billion.
The capital is earmarked for two things: building sovereign AI infrastructure, localized systems built for individual countries — and automating software development at scale. Nvidia is among the backers. Read more. Read more
🆕 U.S. Congress moves to give AI startups room to run
The U.S. House Financial Services Committee this week reviewed efforts to align financial regulators with AI innovation, following the White House’s release of a new national AI legislative framework.
The framework is a clear pivot away from federal oversight bodies. Instead: regulatory sandboxes to speed up deployment, with existing sector-specific agencies handling risk. No new AI regulator in sight. Read more

Of course, it had to be Sora
A viral clip: a cat plays multiple instruments outside a house, slowly driving the person inside a little crazy.
Chaotic. Oddly realistic. Exactly the kind of moment that made Sora blow up online.

Before you go
Sora had the users. It had the Disney deal. It still got cut. That’s the part worth sitting with.
The companies still standing aren’t necessarily building the best things. They’re building things the economics can support. That shift is quiet, but it’s real.
Worth watching what survives the next round of cuts.
