Happy Friday.
Here’s the thing about this week: the money flowing into AI is no longer coming from venture funds. It’s coming from bond markets, the same place governments and the world’s biggest companies borrow.
SoftBank just issued $11.1 billion in bonds, the largest high-yield corporate bond sale in history, to fund its final payment to OpenAI. When bond markets move in, the speculation phase is over.
The people with the most conservative money in the world just said AI is real, long-term, and not going away. Everything else this week happened inside that context.
Before we begin, a quick note.
In our September 4 issue (OpenAI declares the AGI era), we incorrectly described New York City’s AI policy as a plan to bring AI into schools. The actual announcement was the opposite: Mayor Mamdani declared the nation’s broadest moratorium on generative AI in classrooms.
We got it wrong, and we’re sorry. The post has been corrected. Our readers deserve accurate information, and we’ll do better.
